Women's soccer falls in opener, 2-1 in OT
Despite the efforts of sophomore forward Brittany Yost the Heidelberg University women's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a heartbreaking double overtime loss to the Panthers of Hanover College, 2-1.
The game remained scoreless until the 59th minute when Yost knocked in the first goal of Heidelberg's 2013 campaign.
After taking a 1-0 lead midway through the second half, the Panthers went on the offensive.
The Student Princes played fierce defense with the Panthers constantly pushing into the Heidelberg's defensive thirds. It was in the 88th minute when Hanover brought the contest to a tie with a header from Rebecca Tumlin.
The Student Princes had to turn away a few more shots at senior goalkeeper Molly Shriber before the end of regualtion.
The first overtime passed by without a goal from either side. With two minutes remaining in the game it was the foot of Hanover sophomore Rachel Alvis that netted the final goal of the game in the 108th minute.
Although Yost netted the lone Heidelberg goal of the contest, it was junior Hannah Gregoire that led the Berg offensive with two shots both of which were on goal.
Shriber was a force in goal for the Berg upon her return to the pitch. After missing the 2012 season due to injury, Shriber pulled in nine saves on the night for the Student Princes.
The Heidelberg women will look to redeem their loss to Hanover when they take on the Hornets of Kalamazoo College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex. Following their game against Kalamazoo, the Berg will rest before traveling to Cleveland, Ohio to battle the Spartans of Case Western Reserve on Friday, September 6.
