Brey preys on pitching as softball splits

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Heidelberg University softball team rallied in the second game of their doubleheader with Bluffton University to move to 10-4 overall.

The Student Princes fell to the Beavers, 9-3, in the first game but stepped up offensively in the later contest and scored ten runs to collected a 10-4 triumph.

Freshman third baseman Kyleah Brey led the Berg ladies offensively in the first matchup. The clean up hitter went two for two at the plate with two home runs and two RBI's. Sophomore second baseman Lisa Simmons attempted to erase a 3-0 lead the Beavers tacked on in the first inning with an RBI single.

Simmons' RBI single and Brey's two solo shots were all the Beavers duo of pitchers would surrender in the first game. Bluffton's Chloe Shell collected the win after five innings of work.

The Student Princes roared back behind the bat of freshman Caiti Overholt in the second game. Overholt followed her eight RBI affair against Ohio Northern with four against the Beavers.

Brey knocked her third home run of the day to push the Student Princes ahead, 1-0, in the top of the first. Overholt collected her first RBI of the game with a single to centerfield that plated sophomore Marissa Smego.

Bluffton cut the Berg lead in half with one run in the bottom of the first before tying the game in the second.

Overholt earned her second RBI of the game in the top of the third when she knocked a single to right field, scoring sophomore Kayla Zachrich. Bluffton answered with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the third.

The Beavers gained a 4-3 advantage with one run in the bottom of the third before Zachrich slapped a single, which scored freshman Kendra Pratt.

Teid 4-4 entering the top of the sixth, the Berg went on an offensive tear to put the game out of the Beavers' reach. Brey knocked a fielder's choice that scored Jordan Hux on a muffed throw by the Bluffton catcher to open the inning.

Smego hit a single to centerfield that scored senior Jami Wagner before Zachrich lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Simmons.

Overholt rapped a two RBI single to right center which scored Smego from second and Brey from third to close out the inning. In the top of the seventh, Hux put an exclamation point on the Berg victory with a solo home run to centerfield.

Sopohmore Paige Atterholt earned her fifth victory of the season by throwing her third complete game of year. The DeGraff native gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits. Paige collected two strikeouts to push her season total to 13.

The Heidelberg ladies will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University. First pitch from Jock Huffman Field is slated for 1 p.m.
